The Sea by John Banville
The group was divided in its response to this book. Some members loved the story, while others found the author arrogant and self-obsessed. The main character is not a likeable man—moody and miserable though, given the storyline, this is not surprising. The writing style is magical and almost poetic, resulting in a work that is beautifully composed. This book is best suited to readers who enjoy a challenge.
