Bookclub Review
Cockroach by Hage prompted a consensus that the protagonist is borderline psychotic. Cockroaches are lowly creatures, yet remarkable survivors making them a perfect symbol for the hero, who scuttles to survive within Montreal’s refugee community.
The novel feels like an authentic account of a displaced person’s experience. It also parallels the film Taxi Driver: a man from an inherently violent background finds himself in a tense, do-good environment, and the result is bloodshed.
