Restoration by Rose Tremain
An accurate and richly detailed work of historical fiction set in 1660s England. The characters are well developed and believable, although not always likeable. The book raises thoughtful philosophical questions and draws strong thematic parallels between the simplicity of Quaker life and the absurdity of aristocratic society.
Opinions in the group ranged from loving and raving about it to appreciating the author’s talent without actually liking the story itself. It is certainly a book that makes you think.
The group scored it 4 out of 5 — not bad at all!
