We all agreed that this is a suitable Oprah Book Club selection.
 
Some of the characters were one-dimensional and idealised. The story leaves little room for ambiguity; the author tells us what to think and how to feel.
 
The sex scandal was meant to be shocking, but none of us were particularly surprised.
 
The novel is not badly written, but it is not great either.
 
A perfect, mindless holiday read.
