The book club’s verdict ranged from “meandering, sentimental, and just a touch indulgent” to a reluctant admission that it does, in fairness, have “its moments.”

One reader neatly summed it up as containing “everything you always wanted to know about the sex lives of wolves but were too afraid to ask” which may not be the philosophical focus Plato had in mind, but certainly makes for lively discussion.
