Room by Emma Donoghue

A small group gathered on a cold and lonely Thursday evening, perhaps a quiet echo of the wider sentiment surrounding Room.

While a few members admired Donoghue’s ambition and the emotional intensity of the novel, the majority found themselves unconvinced. Some readers struggled with the plausibility of the story, feeling that certain elements stretched credibility. The young boy’s narrative voice, so central to the novel’s impact, divided opinion. For some it was inventive and bold; for others, it felt gimmicky, overextended, and at times grating.

There was also discussion around the novel’s distinctly “American” setting. Several members questioned whether the cultural tone felt entirely authentic and whether the emotional landscape rang true.

Ultimately, the group wrestled with a larger question. Was Emma Donoghue the right writer to carry such a complex and deeply challenging subject?

Books that divide often generate the most compelling conversations.
