Bookclub Review
We could not help but make a careful comparison with James Joyce’s Ulysses. McEwan is a master at drawing you into the protagonist’s mind and life. Some of us even considered labelling Saturday a masterpiece.
However, others did not agree; they would have preferred a little more action and less surgical observation. Some of the scenes were breathtaking and heart-stopping in their suspense, while the detail in others, though remarkable, could perhaps have been less descriptive.
That said, it is a matter of taste. One thing is certain: he is a master writer.
