The Sandcastle by Iris Murdoch unfolds in three distinct layers

At first, it appears to be a simple love story, but it gradually evolves into something more magical and ultimately reveals elements of a psychological novel. Murdoch constructed the narrative with great care and everything feels deliberate and thoughtfully planned. The main characters are well developed, and the dialogue is realistic and engaging.

Parts of the book are genuinely hilarious, as Murdoch cleverly weaves humour into the story, adding depth and warmth to the unfolding drama.
