Pereira Maintains by Antonio Tabucchi Review

It was a great book club choice. It’s a short novel, only about 180 pages, but it’s captivating and written in a very unusual style. As one member pointed out, it is a “deceptively simple” book.

The characters are wonderful, the story is believable, and the author captures the atmosphere of 1939 very effectively. Some readers felt that the author did not fully explore certain strong themes, such as death, but this did not take away from the overall impact of the book.

It received a unanimous rating of 4 out of 5 from the group. I would definitely recommend it. It’s a wonderful read.
