Housekeeping tells the story of Ruth and Lucille, two orphaned sisters growing up in the isolated town of Fingerbone, America.
Raised by a series of guardians, the girls eventually come under the care of their unconventional aunt Sylvie, whose eccentric lifestyle deeply influences Ruth while pushing Lucille to long for conventional family stability.
Through this contrast, the novel explores questions of normalcy, belonging, and what it means to create a home in post–World War II America. Marilynne Robinson’s writing vividly captures the harsh winters and claustrophobic small-town mentality of Fingerbone, creating a haunting and atmospheric setting.
While the novel’s reflective pace and somber tone may feel dreary or meandering to some readers, its quiet depth and lyrical prose make it a powerful meditation on family, loss, and individuality.
