Many of us found the book genuinely funny, especially moments like when John explains to the young Hollywood brat-pack actor Spunk Davis that it might help his prospects in the British market if he changed his first name.
At the same time, the book is self-consciously clever and often brilliant. It was refreshing to read a serious novel that speaks directly to our own times, rather than retreating into the past, and that combination gave us plenty to talk about as a group.
