The Women by T.C. Boyle left the group feeling largely unsatisfied.
The Japanese apprentice’s strange eyewitness account, the gimmicky use of footnotes, and the reverse narrative structure were all points of frustration. The grisly murders that climax the book came as an unwelcome shock to some readers.
In the end, Frank Lloyd Wright remains an enigma, perhaps intentionally so, but not in a way the group found fully satisfying.
That said, the novel is redeemed somewhat by Boyle’s strong writing and a story that is, at times, engaging. Even so, the group struggled to identify who they would recommend the book to.
