The Finkler Question was sharply criticized by many readers, with some expressing disappointment that it had won the Booker Prize. Certain critics felt the novel was judged more harshly because of its award status, while others believed Jacobson did not stretch himself creatively and may have tried too hard to craft an engaging narrative.
However, some readers appreciated the novel’s humor and sharp dialogue, which are among its strongest elements. For others, the central message proved difficult to discern, and several characters were seen as leaning toward stereotype.
Despite the mixed reception, the book is not a difficult read and offers an interesting perspective on aspects of contemporary Jewish life.
