Toby’s Room by Pat Barker

The atmosphere of the First World War is vividly and convincingly portrayed — on this, we were in complete agreement. The dialogue is strong, and the imagery is particularly striking, bringing both the emotional and physical landscapes of the period to life.

However, many felt that the novel’s major themes did not fully succeed. In particular, the brother–sister relationship and the broader message Barker sought to convey left us unconvinced, and there was little consensus about what the author ultimately intended.

Some readers may feel differently. You’ll have to decide for yourself whether you agree with our group’s assessment.
