The Story of an African Farm by Olive Schreiner

Our group found this book challenging to read.

Much of it focuses on big ideas about religion, society, and women’s independence, so at times it feels more like a discussion of beliefs than a traditional story. The plot is also divided into two quite different parts, which can make it feel uneven.

Overall, we preferred the second part of the book, especially Lyndall’s storyline, which felt more engaging and emotionally compelling than the earlier sections about life on the farm.
