The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt

The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt proved to be a compelling choice for our book group.
It is a truly good read that keeps you from wanting to put the book down. Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction, the book is entertaining, exciting, and intellectually satisfying. Greenblatt brings the historical characters and setting vividly to life and makes an obscure moment in literary history feel surprisingly dramatic.
That said, several members of the group felt that the book does not fully deliver on its central promise. While it celebrates the rediscovery of an ancient poem on physics and atheism, it never quite explains in a convincing way how this discovery directly sparked the Renaissance. This gap led to some lively discussion and debate within the group.
Overall, The Swerve was widely enjoyed and appreciated for its storytelling and ambition, even if its larger argument felt incomplete.
We rated the book 4.5 out of 5.
